It is so easy to settle for what you can get instead of what you’ve always dreamed of. It is so easy to blame bad luck for a life which doesn’t measure up. It may seem easier at first. Just going through the motions always seems easy for a while but in the end, it buys us more trouble. So many of us ” fall into ” a job rather than give serious thought to a career and future. The vast majority are working for money and loathe going into the office every day.

Take a look at Claire. She joined a work experience program with her Dad who worked at a bank. The pressure was on to follow in the family business. She took business courses in university because it seemed like a good idea. She loved design but her Dad said she would never make a good living in that field because places were too few at top agencies.

So she got a degree in business. Her grades were not really amazing because she wasn’t really mad about the subject. They were fairly good and she was able to get a job with a pretty decent firm. Time went by and Claire made some progress with the company. Not that quickly though as she was not really interested enough to do that bit extra. She often found herself browsing design websites at the office and clock watching. A few years later, Claire noticed that most of her managers were younger than her. They were so driven. They often worked late and through their lunch hour. They were tenacious and worked at any difficulties until they cracked it. Claire was finding it hard to keep up. There was a bit of negative feedback on her reviews. She started to feel picked at, just because she didn’t feel like killing herself for work. They economy got tighter and the company said they had to make some cuts. Claire was one of them. She just wasn’t essential to the team. Others were always willing to do just that bit more.

Most people spend an average of 70% of our lifetime in work. Considering so much of our time is devoted to it and most of our education is geared to procure it, shouldn’t we love it? If you are not that into your profession, it will show in some way and hold you back. Just think if Claire had not listened to her family so early on about studying business and instead focused on her real passion for design. Even if she did not have the same earning potential it is likely that she would have been happier. If your are happier at your job you try just that bit harder. Top interviewers are always on the look out to spot those who are not well suited to a certain job. Save yourself time and trouble and make sure you are going after the right job for you.
